RV Loans

An RV loan is similar to an auto loan, but the exact terms depend on whether you're buying a motorhome or a towable RV (like a travel trailer or fifth wheel).

Here's how they typically work:

  • You borrow money from a bank, credit union, or RV lender to buy the RV.

  • You make a down payment, usually 10–20%, though some lenders offer loans with little or no money down if you have excellent credit.

  • The lender pays the seller, and you repay the lender in monthly installments.

  • The RV serves as collateral, meaning the lender can repossess it if you stop making payments.

Loan terms

RV loans often have longer repayment periods than car loans because RVs can be expensive.

  • Smaller loans: 5–10 years

  • Larger loans (especially motorhomes): 10–20 years, sometimes up to 25 years

A longer term lowers the monthly payment but increases the total interest you pay.

Interest rates

Your rate depends on factors such as:

  • Your credit score

  • Loan amount

  • New vs. used RV

  • Loan term

  • Current market interest rates

People with excellent credit typically qualify for the lowest rates.

Example

Suppose you buy an RV for $80,000:

  • Purchase price: $80,000

  • Down payment: $16,000 (20%)

  • Loan amount: $64,000

  • Interest rate: 7%

  • Loan term: 15 years

Your monthly payment would be about $575, and over the life of the loan you'd pay roughly $39,000 in interest. (These are approximate figures.)

Other costs to budget for

The loan payment is only part of the cost of owning an RV. You'll also want to plan for:

  • Insurance

  • Registration and taxes

  • Storage (if you can't keep it at home)

  • Maintenance and repairs

  • Fuel

  • Campground or RV park fees

Is an RV loan tax deductible?

Sometimes. If the RV has sleeping, cooking, and toilet facilities and you itemize deductions, the interest may qualify as mortgage interest under certain circumstances. Tax rules can be complex, so it's a good idea to check with a tax professional.

If you're thinking about buying an RV, I can also help you estimate a monthly payment based on the price, down payment, interest rate, and loan term you're considering.
